Why Pipelines

Pipelines play a role in our everyday lives and are essential to our quality of life and economy. Pipelines move the products necessary for transportation, heating and cooling our homes, producing our food supply and manufacturing consumer products.

In the United States alone, more than two million miles of pipelines deliver petroleum products and natural gas. Pipelines are the safest, most efficient and most reliable way to transport energy resources.

In the U.S., Enbridge owns and operates crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids pipelines in 17 states. These pipelines are an important part of North America’s energy infrastructure.

Enbridge operates both transmission pipelines and gathering pipelines. Gathering pipelines transport raw products from production areas to a connection with a higher volume transmission line. From there, the product is “shipped” through the transmission pipeline to market and ultimately to end users such as homes and businesses.
