Southern Lights Pipeline

The Southern Lights Pipeline is a 1,588 mile, 20 and 18-inch pipeline system consisting of two interconnected pipelines: 1) the U.S. portion, operated by Enbridge Pipelines (Southern Lights) LLC, that extends from Manhattan, Illinois to the International Border near Neche, North Dakota; and 2) the connecting pipeline in Canada, operated by Enbridge Southern Lights LP, that extends from the International Border to Edmonton, Alberta. Southern Lights has a capacity of 180,000 barrels per day on which it offers both contract and common carrier service. It went into service on July 1, 2010.

The Southern Lights Pipeline contributes to a North American solution to energy reliability and security of liquid petroleum supply by transporting light hydrocarbons from the Chicago area to Alberta’s oil sands. It is designed to bridge the gap between the available supply of light hydrocarbons (referred to as "diluents") from U.S. refineries and supply centers and increased demand for diluent by petroleum producers in the oil sands and heavy crude oil production regions in Western Canada.
